This isn’t a party, it’s a funeral.
At least, to those paying attention.
July 4th is a MAGA high holiday and Republicans know this.
They know that in addition to marking the birth of our nation and the foundations of our Constitution (which clearly are of little interest to them) it is so much else: it is a valuable commodity, something to be packaged and sold for a hefty profit to their constituents.
It is a quick and easy red, white, and blue daydream for people whose daily lives often feel empty and devoid of meaning: an inexpensive label to slap on their bumpers or their behinds in order to make them feel a sudden rush of faux significance.
It is also Christmas for white Nationalists; a time when their superiority and territorialism and fear of outsiders are more exploitable than ever by someone willing to leverage it.
Unfortunately, someone has been.
Republicans understand the power of weaponized patriotism. (Saying that "we" love America, while "they" clearly despise it.) It's the go-to GOP trope.
They know the way the Stars and Stripes are a cheap intoxicant to those who imagine America to be their sole property, those who feel slighted by a world while enjoying all of its perks, those continually needing an enemy to rail against and puff out their chests toward and give them purpose.
They have learned from the Evangelical Right how expressions of devotion to America are simultaneously coded war rhetoric: battle cries for white soldiers in the Army of the Lord, fighting an ever-encroaching foreign adversary who is breaching their borders and coming for their jobs and their children.
They can say they love this nation, while betraying almost everything central to its beauty: diversity, plurality, equality—and the indoctrinated cult will lap it up because they need the story to be true.
And so this year, the anthems play and the flags wave and the bottle rockets ascend and the M-80's go off—and Fascism quietly enters in the side door while everyone is distracted by the spectacle.
This is the paradox Americans find ourselves in. Our essential liberties have never been more at risk, our electoral process never more assailed, our national sovereignty never more tenuous, our elemental freedoms never more in doubt—and yet the patriotic fervor by the GOP and in its flag-waving rank-and-file has never been greater. This is by design.
Yes, the ship is going down quickly but the music is still playing to convince their foot soldiers that we're still the Land of the Free—and they are dancing wildly into the abyss while waving flags of lost civil wars around monuments to slavery.
The reality is, this Republican party is fully antithetical to America.
They have planned, participated in, supported, and now fiercely defend a deadly terrorist attack on our Capitol designed to overturn a free and fair election, all to protect a traitorous, wannabe despot.
They have commandeered the highest court in our nation, elevating American presidents to king status, oblivious to the staggering irony.
They are, through Project 2025 ,seeking to legislate Evangelical Christianity as the law of the land.
They are relentlessly assaulting the opportunity for all Americans to participate in the electoral process by wielding a stacked court to erode voting rights of those they seek to literally cancel.
They are legislatively attacking women and LGBTQ people and people of color, in order to deny them full access to human and civil rights as citizens here.
They are doing everything in the power to withhold life, liberty, and happiness to all but the whitest and wealthiest among us.
We shouldn't be singing right now, we should be grieving.
We should be holding a somber vigil for the country we could have but may never see.
We should be mourning over how little of our initial Independence has trickled down to the people in the streets.
We should be lamenting how normal rage has become in this supposed "sweet land of Liberty."
This is why these songs of freedom will still ring hollow this July 4th, because those of us who love this country realize how far we are from the aspirations of the songs and ideals they point to—and how tenuous a hold we have on it.
We will be grieving, not because this country deserves better than this party and the amoral monster they idolize—but because right now it does deserve them; because we wish it to be something far greater than their ceremonial dog and pony patriotism and the phony pro-life Christianity they wear when it benefits them.
We see what a farce this all is:
to claim on a land our ancestors stole that any of it belongs to us,
that we should be closing borders our first forbears crossed without permission,
that a man and a party so lacking in goodness should be defining our greatness.
So yes, we'll be loving our country fiercely this July 4th and beyond, by not letting it remain what it currently is and by opposing the fraudulence of their performative patriotism.
We will be working and protesting and loving and building and caring and voting and pushing it to become a place deserving of the songs and the fireworks and the fervor.
When freedom rings for all of us, then we'll really sing.
Until then, we see the joke here—and we don't think it's funny.
Bravo John! Another beautiful, word suppository; cathartic to our souls when inserted and digested by higher consciousness. Bravo! How will we protest? What are we protesting? Will we need weapons of destruction? Or will we simply need to WOKE from our faux worship of mythologies and tribal traditions--comprised primarily of ideologies based in fear--shame--lies, and hate. And wake up to the fact that the Evangelical, Christian Jesus is no more real than pseudo beliefs that promote his existence, that Flags do not canonize superiority, Church Steeples do not make its infrastructure holy, and that tribal traditions are less likely to woke and more likely to welcome fascism. How did America get to where it is today? And what can we do to change the direction we find ourselves destined? With answer, I ask, how can American citizens continue to worship religions over reality, denial over honesty, lies over truth, fantasy over reality, blindness over seeing, withholding over giving, hate over love, and then expect different results? Fascism needs darkness and ash by which to birth. tRump needed a swamp of deniars and liars and their religions they wallowed in in order to birth his hateful rhetoric. Hell, Christians have always sucked off a nipple of hate and shame, guilt and confession—so naturally they were primed for Christian Nationalism. Whether it be human or letter or thought, if it does not promote, encourage, and support equality and justice for all, then it is NOT FOR THE AMERICA WE BELIEVE THE CONSTITUTION INTENDED WE’D HAVE. Leave your churches behind. The church is guilty of hate. Walk. You do not need mythology to know love or truth. Listen to your intuitive voice! And stop with the “Freedom of Speech,” rhetoric. Stop. It’s not rocket science. Just stop using words of attack, defense, or debate. You know truth. You know what is true. And you know how to hold a boundary. So hold it—the very act of keeping your boundary is where true protest begins. We protest by guarding our boundaries from all humans, words, and thought, that do not promote, encourage, and support equality and justice for all. Republicans, MaGats, White Supremist, and all bigots. We protest by holding our boundary and by knowing what is true. Holding and knowing what is true. Always reminding ourselves, Republicans have NEVER NEVER NEVER supported policies which promote, encourage, or support equality or justice for all. Never. So forget how to be nice. Forget about turning the other cheek. Christian Nationalist expect Democrats to be nice. They depend on it! They count on it! Stop being so nice and start identifying their beliefs and ideologies and policies for what they are—REBELLIOUS—MANIPULATIVE—DECEITFUL--for their laws and policies always favor injustice and inequality. And as for a Republican’s image--REBEL masquerading as a law abiding patriot. EVIL masquerading as a warrior for all that is good. HATE masquerading as a crusader for god. LIAR masquerading as truth, and DESTROYER masquerading as keeper of the faith. So who and what do we protest? We protest against everything Republicans represent: Corruption, toxic energy, hateful bigotry, determined inequality and injustice for all, gerrymandering, anti-abortion, anti-democracy, LGBTQ oppression, President replaced by king, oligarchs, election fraud, voter suppression, climate change deniers, and deniers of reality.
If Democrats are guilty of anything, we are certainly guilty of normalizing Republicans policies as simply different viewpoints. But the problem is, the difference is not insignificant—its anti-human. The kind of difference that leads all humanity away from equality and justice straight into the loins of fascism.
John - as I was sharing your Substack post from yesterday "We the People Dissent", I added this note to my post before I saw your post from today:
"On the eve of the day that, as long as I have lived, is one glorious celebration of the freedom we have in this country, my heart is so heavy with the thought that this may be the last celebration of our independence 250 years ago from a king; and the end of independence and freedom for all of us with the possibility of felon Trump's agenda called Project 2025. There will be no celebration of July 4 in the future when so many will be stripped of their right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. Yes, this sounds dramatic, but what I write is the God's Honest truth. Please help me to prevent the end of freedom for all as we know it, and Please ALL of you register to vote if you have not, and then vote Democratic on every spot on every ballot! Your vote is your voice! BE LOUD!!!!!!"
Thank you for validating the true grief that I feel regarding this very possible loss and what it will mean to the lives of my family - particularly my grandchildren - and my friends; and well, I guess all of us as we are all in the same boat together.
