The Olympics Didn't Mock Jesus. Trump and His Supporters Are.

Cue the Conservative outrage machine…

Social media was flooded with the performative histrionics of professed American Christians, incensed at the inclusion during the Olympics’ opening ceremony, of a drag performer parody of Leonardo DaVinci’s Last Supper, which they claim is another example of their incessant persecution.

How could they mock God like this?
What a brazen anti-Christian display!
Jesus is weeping!

These folks seem to lack self-awareness, a mirror, and a Bible, because they’ve been openly ridiculing God for nearly the last decade by passionately supporting Donald Trump and doing so quite unapologetically.

To anyone with even a cursory understanding of the Gospels this isn't difficult to see:

Trump isn't a Christian by any reasonable metric.
He is the antithesis of Christlikeness.
He doesn't give half a damn about Jesus or embody a single of his teachings.
He doesn't emulate him in matters of personal behavior or policy.
He has complete contempt for Jesus and spirituality of any kind.

Trump just understands that American Conservatives are easy marks; that they don't require anything resembling Jesus, as long as they get a little lip service now and again to pacify them and justify their allegiance. (A little religious “don’t ask, don’t tell business.)

They don't require actual Biblical knowledge of the Jesus of the Gospels from him (why should he have more than they do, anyway).

They don't need a shred of mercy or generosity or purity or humility or compassion from him—just a fleeting holy name-drop now and then.

Donald Trump has known how to play white Bible Belt Christians fluently, and he grabbed them by the privilege and told them he was down with Jesus and they didn't ask for receipts.

Not only is Trump not a Christian, but he is aggressively acting in direct opposition to the life and ministry of Jesus in any way one can objectively measure, if you actually open up the Gospels and take a gander.

There is simply no sensible correlation to be drawn between these two entities, though MAGA Christians won't even attempt to make sense of the non sequitur, as they really don't care anymore.

They will not allow Jesus to inconvenience their religiosity by reminding them that Donald Trump is actually Caesar; a malevolent figure appropriating the name of God to fleece the faithful—and that he was there to resist him.

Over the last few decades (and currently with Project 2025) Republican Christians have been willfully cultivating an America that is violently anti-poor, anti-foreigner, anti-middle eastern, anti-brown skin, and anti-compassionate.

They are building a nation with no love for neighbor, no care for the sick, no embrace for the outsider—a nation devoid of the character of Jesus.

Trump Christians like to say that in 2017, "God was invited back into America."

Yet, Jesus of Nazareth; the poor, refugee, brown-skinned, itinerant community organizer and anti-establishment activist at the very heart of the Christian story would have no place in Donald Trump's America or the churches and homes of those who applaud him. 

The greatest irony of the Olympics’ opening ceremony, is that drag performers represent an LGBTQ community who is the most vulnerable and most experiencing violence here at the hands of professed followers of Jesus. They are those Christ would be most embracing in these moments, as he was always with the least of these.

As with every MAGA protest, they will look everywhere but in the mirror (an intentional misdirection), because to do that would confront them with the truest ridiculing of Christ: from those claiming his name.

If Conservative Christians in America are really upset by the “mockery of God,” they’ll stop passionately supporting a vile, racist, lying, hateful rapist and trying to pretend he was sent by God in order to avoid admitting they really don’t care about Jesus and his teachings.
