Seems silence also overcame you in not responding to your friend in the grocery line. Is one form of silence any worse than the other? It takes courage to speak out in all situations and perhaps more so in personal interactions. I hope you forward this post to your "non political" friend to thank them for the inspiration and that we all face how hard it is to be courageous particularly one on one rather than online where we're all generally preaching to the choir.

I know several people, good people claiming to be good Americans, who don't vote. That most simple and most precious act of our Republic, and they don't show up. Yet, these same non-voters complain about what they are seeing, unable to make the connection between their apathy and the state of our political world.
