We were once the envy of the world. The leader in technology, infrastructure, democratic institutions, the rule-of-law, and the idealized but often attainable "American dream". A beacon of opportunity and freedom that drew the best and the brightest from around the world and every corner of the nation. Now, we're a nation I no longer recognize and one that I'm more ashamed of than proud of.

Trump is a tumor, but the habits of the nation led to a lifestyle that was welcoming and nurturing to his form of cancer. Reagan killed the fairness doctrine, and all of a sudden everyone could choose their own "alternative facts". Right wing AM radio with the likes of Rush Limbaugh, spewing racist lies and punching downward became what passed for entertainment. Fox "news" followed and suddenly, it was all easy answers, and all problems were always someone else's fault if you listened to the voices of the right.

Accountability and shame went out the window, and the biggest criminals became "filthy rich" on private profits and public bailouts. No wealthy or connected person was ever held to account and fake "businessmen" like Trump, in reality a serial bankrupt and lifelong fraud, got their own "reality TV" shows where his "you're fired" became cruel and pathetic titillation for masses of morons. The Banana-Republicans saw their opportunity, and turned this racist circus into their base of resentful, uninformed, and entitled "low information" voters. The internet took all of the disparate losers, loons, and outcasts that now form the Trump base, and tied them all together into a malignant political force. The flat earthers, end-times ranters, Q-Aloons, Incels, and basement dwellers who used to be consigned to the fringes were now given front row seats in the MAGA circus. Just look at Trump's cabinet for proof.

No great nation stays at the top forever, but America's fall has been fast, humiliating, and complete. Can we recover someday? Perhaps, but our disastrous choices will and must lead us to utter collapse first, if only to break the spell of the 38% of Americans still, despite everything, in the full grip of Trump's lies, hatred, scapegoating, and easy (stupid) answers to truly complex issues.
