As Rev. Budde is being attacked by MAGA, how about sending her a thank you note? Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Episcopal Diocese of Washington DC, 3101 Wisconsin Ave., Washington DC 20116

How about a Thank You donation to an organization that she supports?

I will do so

Thank you for providing the address - I sat right down and wrote her a thank you note. She was bold and I commend her for continuing to speak out for those who need a voice.

Thanks, Kate! This suggestion & those re: Donating are some of the best ways to drive the crazies crazier!

I thought about this ... now will act on it. Thank you!!

Ty, Kate. Great idea!!! Setting about it now.

Already sent her an email thanking her for bravery for telling truth to power right to its face.

Emails are nice, but the mail is nicer.

I am so glad you suggested this idea in your comments! We live in Northern Virginia, and are regular supporters of the Cathedral. I've drafted my letter of gratitude to Rev. Budde and will get it out to her on Monday.

Thanks for her address, am writing to her today!!

I watched Rev. Budde speak live. When she directly addressed the felon prez, my jaw dropped in awe and admiration. That took a ton of courage to do that in front of a full church. I'm sure the prez was squirming with discomfort, followed by white rage. Not the kind of attention he craves. And by a strong woman. Thanks for being a warrior for the teachings of Jesus, Rev. Budde!

Do you think he was .. squirming? From that same church where Pres Carter’s funeral was held, Steve Ford and Ted Mondale both read letters their dads wrote in the event Carter died after them. They spoke similarly and looked at Trump. Steve Ford in particular. I saw no reaction by Trump or Melania. He so strongly believes his own and others’ (Franklin Graham!) hype that there is no squirming. My fear are the pardoned J6ers going into a place of worship…

He and JustaDick Vance laughed, actually. They really don’t give a shit.

Thanks for the giggle, Linda! I'll be using that great nickname for the VPPOS :)

Stolen from a contest that Andy Borowitz ran several months ago to create a nickname for him. It was the winning entry.

The question to ask is: "Did God create this world with all these different plants and animals, landscapes and people, art and music; all of it? Then why do you hate God, so much that you would deny, God's works?" I have often said two things: 1. My God loves diversity, just look at the world. And, 2. God speaks to people in the language they best understand.

Some folks just don't get it.

Thank you for this, John. I posted her words and what the Georgia congressman said on X. You should read the comments on my FB post. Immediate push back from Trump followers. They call me the hypocrite. Please.

I only saw brief snippet of this sermon but what I saw clearly showed Trump clenching his jaw and the hypocrite Vance pretending to dismiss what she was saying. (And, as an aside, what is with Vance's obsession about people's sexuality anyway?)

But when Trump says that something is "bad" (which is what he said to a reporter about the sermon afterwards), you know it was actually very, very good and the truth. This man and his quislings deal in nothing but lies, cruelty and deceptions - and Rev Budde simply shone a light on their true nature and laid it bare for all to see - with a quiet, perfectly delivered sermon. And if there's one thing these people do not abide well it's being exposed for the frauds that they are.

I do often wonder about people that go to such great lengths to completely distort the true message of Christianity (which I always thought was love and kindness and compassion) to suit their own agendas - they really must not believe in any of it if they so willingly sell their souls for power and greed. Well, I only hope karma works.

Yes Well said If Jesus came today, he would be mocked as a soft liberal.

#47 would have him arrest and deported!

Expand full comment

Absolutely!!

He’d be thrown in jail. No job, not born in America, undocumented, brown skin, depending on others for his daily bread, and pissing off the establishment.

MAGA would toss him in the can or deport him to Mexico.

I am truly starting the think Trump is some type of Antichrist. What a despicable excuse for a human being. And for him and his cabal to cloak themselves as Christians makes it even worse.

Expand full comment

The only reason he was there was because it was a "national" service and he had to show up.

Expand full comment

I wish he and his minions would just admit that they worship at the altar of greed and malice and stop this ludicrous pretense - but, realistically, that's a bridge too far for these people as it would entail being honest ......

They won't because they would lose the Evangelical vote.

I really wanted to find some where on the substack community to write this. I posted something about sanctuary cities being biblical ( in reference to cities saying they won't comply with immigrants round up. I said fact check me and of course someone said I was wrong. So I fact checked me and I hope whoever posted the denial reads this. Sanctuary cities - Exodus 21:12-14; Numbers 35:9-34; Deuteronomy 4:42-43; 19:1-5; Joshua 20; I chronicles 6. I might have confused some Numbers and Deuteronomy but you get the point. Look it up y'all have Google too!!

And of course, learning about Jefferson’s Bible would really set them off!

Holy Smokes 😧 John, if you ever want to switch profession's, I think you're are on to something here. I really wish our MAGA Christian brothers and sisters would read this, and see the Light ? One can Hope... Thank You, and will reStack ASAP 🙏💯👍

So well written. I don't know how folks can live in two opposing worlds. What justification can they possibly be offering?

Expand full comment

They believe they are doing the lords work by opposing the “evil” of democrats. They base this mainly on our support of abortion rights. Because of our support for bodily autonomy we are All murderers and “obviously” god is against “murdering” babies. My conclusion is based on many, many convos with religious white folks I know. Of course now they have had so much indoctrination from the pulpit that there is no issue that is not evidence of how evil democrats are but the foundation is abortion.

As always, your writing resounds truth. I don't know that I will ever be able to wrap my head around the fact that so many are self-deceived and unable to see things as they really are. I believe that the adversary (Satan) is abroad in the land.,

Thanks for explaining why they want those they can’t love as a neighbor need to be deported. Now it makes sense. Shame….

It's unclear why these individuals' continued use of capital "C" Christian is warranted.

What an embarrassment to have the felon POTUS ask the Rev. Budde & the Episcopal Church for an apology. I, too, think a thank you note is in order. I will be sure to up our pledge to our parish to be sure we can increase outreach to the population he finds offensive.
