This needs to be read out loud at every vigil that is held tonight for Nex. Beautifully written. Thank you

It's textbook gaslighting when Christian Conservatives claim that they don't want non-conforming gender/sexuality ideology "forced" on them when they're the ones stoking the embers of hatred by passing bans and encouraging violence toward folks just trying to peacefully live their lives as their truest selves.

There's actually a term for this: Stochastic Terrorism - the public demonization of a person or group resulting in the incitement of a violent act, which is statistically probable but whose specifics can not be predicted.

Nothing can bring Nex back to life, but I pray Nex's family receives some justice ⚖️ .

This absolutely unconscionable, evil treatment of a child happened in a northern suburb of Tulsa, OK a relatively more educated and wealthy city in this state, the University of Tulsa a bright spot of scholarship and social justice. But also home to fundamentalist Oral Roberts University and horrific history of racism, Klan, and the infamous Tulsa Race Riots, not to mention the ongoing subjugation of Indian communities, squandering of reproductive rights, etc., etc.

Yes. My dad graduated from Tulsa University after he returned from WWII. My sister was born in Tulsa. We lived in Tulsa after our parents divorced. Christian fundamentalism runs very deep in Oklahoma. It is very sad. There are more enlightened types, to be sure, but far too few. Republicans have had a strangle hold on state politics for many years, which is mainly why we did not move back after our Covid job loss in Missouri. We chose to retire to Virginia. Better scenery, weather & politics.

I moved there for my first job out of college in broadcast TV in 1979, producing programming on local issues, some very controversial for Oklahomans at the time such as the Equal Rights Amendment. Later went to TU and met my husband there and moved when we could. There are progressive people in the urban areas of OK and Texas and it is so frustrating to observe what is happening in their state governments, legislation passed that supports exclusion, bans books and not guns, and horrible incidents like this one. The mentality depicted in Killers of the Flower Moon lives on. A great book revealing a Oklahoman history not taught in schools.

Yes, I have read Killers of the Flower Moon. It was very revealing. My family had a family reunion this past Labor Day in California. Several of my cousins live in CA. We were talking about our grandmother & how she worked in the Osage County area during the time of the Osage murders. We are uncertain of exactly where she worked or for whom. My dad’s oldest sibling lived & worked in Ponca City for many years at the daily newspaper there. All my aunts & uncles of that generation are all gone now & us cousins are getting up in years. It is maddening that Republicans have a death grip on state politics now. It is so counterproductive. In the years before statehood Oklahoma was actually a fairly progressive place, yet it devolved into the Osage Murders, the Tulsa Race Riots & other counterproductive activities. I attended Tulsa Public Schools in the ‘60s & the story of the race riots was not taught. My mother actually worked for the City of Tulsa at the Community Relations Commission. There always seemed to be unrest with the black community which I did not understand. Living briefly in Missouri was not really any better. When it came time to consider our retirement years, we knew OK or MO were not places we wanted to live, hence our move to Virginia. VA has its moments but there’s better weather & mostly better politics. Certainly better scenery. We watch local weather & laugh out loud when they talk about wind. They have no idea…..

That is interesting about your grandma. So true about the weather--we are getting 35 mph plus gusts here in Denver today. My husband attended Tulsa Public School and his mom taught. He went to Nathan Hale High. Thanks for sharing.

Governor Kevin Stitt & State School Superintendent Ryan Walters are primarily responsible for this horrific act as well as the students & their parents of Owasso High School for their bias against the LGBTQ community in their area. Too many people in Oklahoma & across the country are prejudiced against anyone different than a white cis gender person. They would cite religious reasons that do not include loving one another. I was born & raised in Oklahoma & had a regular church home there. Job opportunities took us away from Oklahoma to Missouri in 2018. We were in Missouri when Covid came. When it was time to consider retirement, we knew we did not want to retire in OK or MO despite family & a loving church home. We relocated to Virginia. There are far too few loving, accepting people in OK & MO.
