I am so upset about this. My son, who is a veteran, is apoplectic. Then, the Commander in Chief tells a reporter he knew nothing about this. I need to process all of this before I act on my first impulses. But what has to happen before this regime is held accountable?

They knew that Signal app erases messages... and that is against the law.

Their deflection makes me feel ill.

And this is just the beginning.

Not to mention that an app like Signal does not have military grade encryption, it's not approved, and is an especially interesting target for intelligence services. No computer system is unhackable. It just depends on the talent, funding, and determination of the attacker. Nations easily have all of the above. I'll bet they were using their personal devices, too. I'd put money on them being compromised.

They're a bunch of James Bond wannabes.

But boy oh boy is the Colorado "news" of his portrait being taken down at the capital because he didn't like it sure made headlines. He's acutely aware of his ego, yet the job of being the POTUS. Ahhhh, f*$K that! Let's monetize the Easter egg roll with sponsors! Yay!

My Vietnam vet hubby continues to share examples of the "security" steps that were taken back in the day...He is also furious & saying: "FUBAR." John's post & Dr. Heather Cox Richardson's "Letter" are much needed to understand that with each miss step, esp this one, this administration gets closer to self-imploding. We hope it comes sooner than later! Our experienced veterans will be making "good trouble" over this for sure!

Trump's National Security Advisor was literally in the Kremlin while on this group chat! This is real not some scene from a Tom Clancy novel. Watch the latest post from Malcolm Nance who definitely knows what he is talking about.

Fox News didn’t even cover this story until this morning—why am I not surprised? When they did, it was a nothing burger and Trump casting aspersions on the Atlantic and Jeffrey Goldberg and Pete Hegseth denying that there was any texting of war plans. There was Trump saying he had never heard of this fiasco, just like Project 2025. Lies, lies, and more lies. A normal president would make heads roll and fire Pete Hegseth for security breach and incompetence.

Then he would have to find another sycophant to take Hegseths place. Thats too much work and would interfere w his golf weekends. Gabbard and Waltz and Patel should go too.

Trump's White House,

Trump's responsibility.

Trump's people,

Trump's responsibility.

Whatever the question, saying to reporters that he doesn't know about something on his watch, is unacceptable. The shrug and feigned ignorance is an insult to the American people.

Get angry, demand better!

Excellent article hits the nail on the head. Pete Hegseth must resign now - Democratic leaders must not be content with excuses or we'll investigate this - they must demand immediate resignation and the public must back them and keep this on the front pages.

You underestimate the ability of the White House to spin anything, no matter how egregious. The response will be to pillory Jeff Goldberg. "He should have realized that he wasn't supposed to be in this meeting and exited promptly." The Atlantic will be punished in whatever way Trump tries, just like he wanted CBS forced off the air. If Goldberg had exited the meeting, we would not have known about this screw-up. Hegseth will remain in his position without any kind of reprimand, and the Republicans who speak out about it will be "primaried". Courage is in short supply. Law firms have been intimidated and announced changes in their practice that benefit Trump. The courage in America is limited to these subscribed Substacks and those who comment. You have a heaping serving of that courage John. Please be safe.

I will never ever understand how all of these GOP politicians (and so many Democratic ones as well) can get up everyday, look at themselves in the mirror, look at their spouses, children and close friends, and go to work with full intentions of saying NOTHING. To put the lure of power, title and access and a 5 minute stint on Fox above decency. To be so in love with money and their lovely homes, all the baubles of wealth that they can sell out their own constituents. To be so terrified of being primaried or kicked out of a political tribe that they willingly sell their own souls and dignity to be a part of this complete destruction of our country and way of life. I get that some of them feel very threatened, but FFS will a subset of them grow a pair and stand up? (Super thankful for Bernie and AOC touring the country and fueling the resistance.) As Wajahat Ali said on a podcast last week, cowards die a thousand deaths, a little one each day.

Once again you cut through all of the lies and excuses of Trump supporters.

They are deeply troubled by the idea that whiteness does NOT equal Godliness.

Democrats in Congress ought to be loud and clear about demanding an investigation. If GOP/MAGA ignore them, then be loud in asking WHY they do not want ab investigation into a blatant security breach and attempt to break the law. After all, we had to have multiple hearings on Benghazi...

I received an email today from our Senator Tim Kaine. He wrote that he and 13 of his Senate colleagues sent a letter to trump demanding answers to the following five questions, and many more:

1) What disciplinary action will be taken against those involved in this recklessness? 2) Will their security clearances be revoked?

3) What other sensitive military information has been coordinated in group chats like this one?

4) What training on the handling of sensitive information had this group received,?

5) What remedial training is available?

The powerful law firm Paul Weiss had an opportunity to something powerfully good for "all" and unless they have some secret card up their sleeve it appears they blew it for their own selfish reasons My hope for smart people in power to do anything significant has dwindled.

I agree that demands from the senators are unlikely to result in any meaningful action. Meanwhile, the men who were illegally taken to the El Salvador prison, some of whom had no gang affiliation, are stuck. They're living in dehumanizing conditions and some of them may not survive. Yet, those responsible laugh and praise themselves .They are proud of their viciousness and cruelty. A complete lack of remorse.

Yep, that about sums it up. And Trump is throwing the blame back on Hegseth. “I didn’t know about it,” as if that absolves him of responsibility. Next step is he blames Biden. And then Hillary’s emails. And the sh#t just keeps piling up. I’m looking forward to the time when it piles over his head.
