Robert Reich’s column today interviewed a former Dem representative who has been one and is now an ex-pat. This individual is getting calls from current representatives saying they are too afraid of TFG to stand up to him, too scared to become an ex-pat themselves and wondering what to do. The Ex-pat said “if you can afford it, buy a second home in Europe that could become your safe house.” (Paraphrasing)
This pisses me off so much!!
We the People mean NOTHING to them, and I’m beyond fed up. What the absolute fuck are WE THE PEOPLE supposed to do when corporations continue to take more than their fair share, when groceries are skyrocketing, when these ‘representatives’ are ready to strip more and more away from us?
Gonna drag my broken foot upstairs to start writing my postcards. Being the caregiver for my mom with dementia is hard enough with both of us depending on SS. But seeing the state of our country swirling the cosmic toilet bowl has me mad as hell! And one way of another, I’m channeling that rage into action.
I would assume that since you’ve had the opportunity to reflect on your response at the MN Q & A, you might answer differently if asked that question again… a response more along the lines of what you said in this piece. Everyone needs to hear the cold, hard truth about what’s at stake in this year’s election. You hit the nail on the head when you stated we must all do our part to make sure, that come November, humanity in America prevails in a resounding and resolute way. #VoteBlueNoMatterWho
John, thank you for looking at the very real possibility of the unthinkable square in the face. We've been on a trajectory towards the unthinkable, and you, Thom Hartmann and others have been brave enough to face and speak out loud what none of want to hear or think about: it is possible, it is plausible, and its probability grows daily.
At some point, if this is how it is going to play out, its inevitability will be as plain to see as an ocean suddenly receding. One can stay at that beach and pick up newly exposed shells, and flopping fish abandoned by the ocean, or they can see it for what it is, and rush to high ground, warning others along the way.
You are not being an alarmist, but you are sounding the alarm. We have to be prepared to do whatever we can now, before the ocean has receded, to prevent it from happening. But once the tsunami is certain, our focus can no longer be prevention--it is force bigger than all of us--but warning and preparing.
How to prepare: as you said, do what we've been doing. Letting our light shine by loving others, by living as Jesus taught us to live. He told the end-time generation what would be coming, and also how live during that time. "For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it."
Thank you John for for sharing so succinctly about the unimaginable nightmare we find ourselves in. I keep thinking this just can't be real. Next year at this time I could possibly be in jail or worse. Wth?!! When 1/3 of the country is blindly following the worst con man this country and the world has ever seen it is so disheartening. And it makes me so damn angry. But through the anger I get motivated to keep fighting.
Thanks so much for your beautiful words. You truly have a gift and I am honored to be fighting along side of you for the soul of this country we all love so much.
Steve, if you see the ocean recede rapidly, being scared will drive you into action to both get to higher ground, and to instill motivation to alarm others to the danger. Our state of mind will have no affect on the coming tsunami, but it will give us a chance to survive it.
Again, I don't think you read the piece or you're choosing to ignore what I actually say, among which is that "we need to be a non-violent, not-passive presence."
If it's grave, then it's good to be scared. Trans teens are scared. Migrants at the border are scared. Muslims are scared. Women are scared. That's why this isn't the time for gentleness. Peace today.
I don't know anyone who isn't scared. Many of us are having literal nightmares. I sure am. I seriously thought about selling my property and leaving the country to set up a larger residence where I could to offer refuge to others. But I am 72 and that seems a bit beyond my physical abilities. Where would I go? Nowhere, in this very connected world, will be a safe haven unaffected by the rise of authoritarianism in the largest economies and governments on the planet.
Some of us already vote and it is okay with me if lots of potential non-voters decide to vote because they are too scared not to. Fear is an appropriate response when one is in danger, it motivates action and always has. Whether it is a saber toothed tiger, a rattlesnake, a tsunami or the despicable Republican frontrunner and his minions. I think that if you aren't afraid, you aren't paying attention.
IMHO what needs to happen now includes getting out the vote, but goes well beyond it.
But, John, I don't know what to do. I would like to see huge protests on the mall in DC, but I don't know how to organize one. I will volunteer to cover voting locations in my town, but sure seems like so much more is necessary.

If you think an accurate statement about the gravity of the moment is "scaring people", I'm not sure what to tell you.
